President Jimmy Carter 1977 letter to aliens-4
The Voyager Golden Records are phonograph records that were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. They contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. In addition, then US President Jimmy Carter penned the following note and placed it in the Voyager 1 space probe to accompany the Golden Record. It remains the only letter in ...  View More

The Supermoon: Breathtaking photos and hilarious edits and memes

On November 15, 2016 the Moon came closest to Earth for the first time since 1948. The moon appeared larger (14%) and brighter (30%) than usual and many photographers took the opportunity to capture the amazing view of the night sky. While the world was captivated by images of the "Supermoon", unfortunately, in many places, city lights and clouds blocked the amazing view and the "Supermoon" became a super-disappointment.  View More

What color is the Sun? White.

Brilliant little lesson found on Stanford University website: It is a common misconception that the Sun is yellow, or orange or even red. However, the Sun is essentially all colors mixed together, which appear to our eyes as white. This is easy to see in pictures taken from space.  View More

Cement mixer lost in Winganon, Okla. 40 years ago is still sitting by the side of the road

No one is sure exactly when the wreck happened. Some accounts put it in the early 70s, some in the late 60s and others as far back as 1959. A cement truck rolled over on the side of the road. The company that owned it came and got the truck, but left the mixer behind because it held tons of concrete. In 2011, using paint and some props, two artists turned it into a faux space capsule complete with NASA logo, American flag and fake rocket motors.  View More

Elon Musk unveils the “SpaceX Interplanetary Transport System” for Mars colonization and to turn humans into a “multi-planetary species”

According to SpaceX founder Elon Musk: "There are two fundamental paths facing humanity today. One is that we stay on Earth forever and then there will be an inevitable extinction event. The alternative is to become a spacefaring civilization, and a multi-planetary species". However, the question of how such extravagantly expensive missions would be funded remains largely in the dark.  View More

NASA estimates that the near-Earth asteroid “Eros” contains 20 billion tons of gold

Some scientists are looking to the heavens to find more gold. In 1998, the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft passed close to the asteroid Eros and sent back data indicating that the potato-shaped space rock was a vast warehouse of metals. If Eros is typical of stony meteorites that crash to Earth, then it contains about 3 percent metal. Given the dimensions of the asteroid, NASA scientists estimate that Eros may house 20 billion tons (18.1 billion metric tons) of gold and ...  View More

NASA plans to explore frigid oceans on Saturn’s moon Titan with an autonomous submarine

NASA is making plans to send a smart submarine to Saturn's moon, Titan, so it can autonomously explore the depths of its frigid oceans. The submarine would probe the freezing liquid methane and ethane oceans that cover the moon's surface, beaming back valuable data to Earth, cryogenics engineer Jason Hartwig announced at the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) Symposium.  View More

In 1963, a cat called “Felicette” became the first feline in space

Before humans actually went into space, one of the prevailing theories of the perils of space flight was that humans might not be able to survive long periods of weightlessness. For several years, there had been a serious debate among scientists about the effects of prolonged weightlessness. American and Russian scientists utilized animals - mainly monkeys, chimps and dogs - in order to test each country's ability to launch a living organism into space and bring it back alive and unharmed.   View More

Mars is the only planet solely populated by robots

With growing horror, NASA officials came to the realization today that through their ongoing Mars Exploration Rover Program, they had inadvertently created a planet populated solely by robots. Even more terrifying, explained top NASA brass, is that the population of robots operating on Mars has grown at an alarming rate. In only eight years, between 2004 and 2012, the number of robots operating on Mars has doubled.  View More
